Acrostic Poems

During our water unit, we wrote an Acrostic poem as a class about water:

Wet waves

Animals live in it

The water cycle

Enormous oceans

Rainfall

You may choose a subject from the list (or choose your own) and write an acrostic poem using it. Remember that in an acrostic poem you are to choose your subject and each line from the poem begins with a letter from your subject word.  Your poem doesn't have to rhyme but it does have to connect with your subject!

Subject List:
crab, turtle, clam, fish, dolphin, shark, ocean, lake, beach, clean, coast

Once your poem is finished, you may decorate it with pictures that go along with your poem.  Feel free to share your poem with a partner.

Picture walk and organize your thoughts!

Now that we've read about, watched and viewed pictures about water pollution, it's time to organize our thoughts into a graphic organizer.  You can choose a 5 or 7 circle graphic organizer.  Your topic "water pollution" is written in the circle in the middle. Use the circles around the outside to list important information and details about our topic.  We will use our graphic organizers to help us when drafting and writing our paragraphs.
See below for examples of the graphic organizers we will be using:

Political Cartoons on Pollution

A political cartoon is an illustration or comic strip that was created to send a message to readers.  What are they trying to tell us? Discuss this with your partner.

Your turn! Create your own cartoon showing how animals in their habitats are effected by pollution. You may work with a partner or by yourself for this activity.

Connect!

Animal rescue from oil spill

Click the link and discuss with a partner how this video connects to the experiement we conducted in class today.

How are the pelicans being taken care of?
What similarities do you see between what they are doing in the video to what we did in class?
What do you think will happen to the pelicans once they are clean?

Water & it's pollutants- Fast Facts! (grinningplanet.com)

Ocean Water: A majority of water on the planet is the salt water in the oceans and seas.
Fresh Surface Water: This is the fresh water in rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and similar bodies of water. (Almost all of these contain fresh water, though a few picture of spring/streamlakes contain salty water.) The world's ice caps and glaciers contain very, very large amounts of fresh water.
Groundwater: The majority of the planet's liquid freshwater is stored in underground aquifers. When this water is polluted, it is very hard to treat.
